NAC AND VICARIATE OF UP-PER Apostolic Vicariate was estab-lished by his Holiness, Pius IX., on the29th of July, 1853, and embraces thenorthern peninsula of the State of Mich-igan, and the adjacent islands. (ThisApostolic Vicariate has been erected intoa Diocese, under the name of the St. Mary, by a decree of the first pro-vincial council of Cincinnati, celebrated inMay, 1855. But the confirmation of thedecrees of this council had not yet arrivedfrom Rome at the time of the issuing ofthis Report.) It is governed by the Frederic Baraga, Bishop of Ama-zonia, and Vicar Apostolic of Upper Michigan. The neighboring Bishops haveceded to Bishop Baraga part of their In-dian Missions, those bordering on LakeMichigan and Lake Superior. CHURCHES AND St. Mary, Chippewa Co., St. MarysChurch—Rt. Rev.
