In the Ohio valley, where it abounds, it is popularly known as one of the buckeyes, and, though never a tree, it gains a height of fifteen to twenty feet, with a broad, well-rounded head, the foliage resembling that of the common horse-chestnut, but sufficiently distinct to be characteristic. The leaves are smaller, and composed of from five to seven oval-obovate leaflets, somewhat rough.
