January 1988: A crowd stands in Cathedral Square in front of the south face of the snow-covered, golden-domed Dormition (Uspensky) Cathedral inside the walls of the Kremlin in Moscow. The original foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by Grand Prince Ivan I in 1326; the cathedral has since been rebuilt. The cathedral was once one of the country's most important monuments and hosted the coronation ceremony of every Russian ruler of Russia up to and including the last emperor, Nicholas II, in 1896. It reverted to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1991.
