The plaster ceiling was replacedby a very handsome oak roof resting on the original corbels, greatly enhancingthe lofty effect of the interior. The old oak-work has been cleaned from thepaint with which its delicate carving had become encrusted ; while the panellingAnd cornice above the stalls are new, replacing the deal and plaster of lastcentury. The organ-loft is almost entirely new. The beautiful Sedilia havebeen reconstructed, and the canopy work of the Reredos restored in stonefrom the design of one of the original canopies. The restoration was completed. New College. 25 in 1S94, when the nijhes were filled with a seriesof statues illustrative of the Te Detitn, under thesuperintendence of Mr. Pearson, R. A., the sculptorbein^ Mr. Hitch, of London. The E. end has thusresumed the stately grandeur of its early days, be-fore the reign of Queen Elizabeth, by whose com-mand the original statues were removed. Thesmaller but beautiful sculptures immediately abovethe Communion Table are the of a glazed recess on the N. side of the chapel is pre-served the Founders Pastoral Stajf, exceedingly elegantin form, of silver gilt, wrought and curiouslyenamelled with jewels, one of the most gorgeous relicsof the kind in existence.
