This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Lunar rover testing in volcanic landscape. Asguard rover simulating a lunar mission on rough volcanic surfaces being used for a training course. The robot navigates by continuously building a 3D model of the environment. Humans can drive it manually, but this robotic explorer runs mostly in autonomous mode. This volcanic landscape is in the Timanfaya area of the island of Lanzarote, part of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. This area was the location for one of the elements of the Pangaea training course (started in 2016), designed to simulate missions to places such as the Moon and Mars. Photographed in November 2017.
