Malaria research, Africa. Researcher preparing a culture medium for the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Malaria is a severe disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, of which P. falciparum is the most deadly and causes 90 percent of deaths. It is transmitted to humans by blood-feeding Anopheles mosquitoes. This research is for the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement), a French organisation that funds research in developing countries. Photographed in Cotonou, Benin, in 2007.
