The Salar de Coipasa, located in the Altiplano region of western Bolivia, covers an area of approximately 2500 square kilometers. The region comprises of arid closed basins in which evaporation of mineral-rich waters has led to the formation of thick, flat-laying salt deposits (pale areas towards the upper half and at far left of image). The dark areas (above and below centre middle) derives from dark coloured volcanic sediment and rock. The Lauca River (left of centre) feeds Lake Coipasa (lower half of image). Photographed 20th September 2012.
