Heitz, whose portrait appears in connectionwith this sketch, was born February 21st 1818, at Neuen-kirchen bey Melle, near Osnabrueck, Germany, and isthe son of John Frederick Nicholas Heitz. His mothersname was Anna Maria Elsa Hanhardt. The father, whodied when the son was but six years of age, desired himto become a minister. Accordingly he studied diligentlyfor this object, acquiring more than a common educa-tion. Changing his purpose, he left his studies at theage of 16 or 17 and an apprenticeship as awatchmaker. At this he served four years, and he after-ward traveled several years in different parts of Europeto perfect his knowledge of the trade. Returning homehe commenced business for himself in the manufactureof watches and clocks. He continued at this businessuntil 1847, when he with his widowed mother and herchildren decide
