Old lIousK, East Hagkolkmc THE BORDER OF OXON AND BERKS Museum, but to a well-known reader in theLibrary in the seventies, one of the SobieskiStuart brothers (enthusiastic collectors of Stuartrelics), who claimed to be descendants of theBonny Prince.^ Sandford Manor as it is to-day is a veryprosperous-looking farm. It stands on the lowground below the church, and faces the river, and from the higher level is concealed fromview by the many barns and outbuildings in itsproximity. The house itself is a gabled Tudorbuilding with stone mullioned windows and door-ways ; it has, however, been so much restored thatit looks more like a new than an old house. Buttime and change have dealt more leniently withthe ancient chapel of the Hospitallers, whichafter the Dissolution was granted to EdmundPowell, the father possibly of the Edmund beforementioned. It is detached, and now serves thepurpose of a barn; the fine east window is blockedup, but the mullions and tracery are visible. Abrave old door
