Ancient Greek coins, 19th-century illustration. These are tetradrachm coins, an Ancient Greek coin (usually silver) that was equivalent to four drachmae. This coinage was used from around the 6th century BC to the 1st century BC. The coins at top and bottom are from the Greek region of Arcadia and the city-state of Athens (showing Athena). The coin at lower centre is from Carthage. The gold coin at upper centre shows Berenice II, Queen of Egypt. Artwork from volume 2 (1875) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
