Polarised light micrograph of a pandorina sp. green algae (upper, rounded) and a Fragilaria sp. diatom (lower, filamentous). Pandorina is a green alga composed of 8, 16, or sometimes 32 cells held together in a closely bound colony surrounded by a mucus layer. Each cell has two flagella of projecting outwards through the mucilage. Diatoms are a type of single-celled photosynthetic algae that form a significant portion of the Earth's biomass. They generate about 20 to 50 percent of the oxygen produced on the planet each year. Magnification: 186x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
