Memorial to Confucius where students at the South Lake Academy in Hongcun China would worship Confucius before and after lessons. Confucius (551-479 BCE) a Chinese philosopher and politician is considered to be one of the most important individuals in history, his teachings formed the culture and society of East Asia. The five carved wooden plaques honoring Confucius and four of his disciples (L-R) Zeng Shen, Yan Hui, Confucius, Mencius, Zisi stand on an alter with a posthumous Tang Dynasty portrait of Confucius by Wu Dozi hanging behind them. Hongcun is an 800 year-old village and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Anhui Province of Eastern China.
