Other towns are Lethbridge (connected by railway with theCanadian Pacific line), where the coal mines are being worked; FortMacleod, a ranching centre; Banff, in the recently formed NationalPark, near which anthracite coal is being mined, and where thefamous sulphur springs are found, and Edmonton, which is the centreof the oldest settlement in the district. The construction of a railway from Calgary to Edmonton, a distanceof about 190 miles, was commenced in the summer of 1890, and com-pleted in the following year. ?i ?* » 4. This district comprises an area of 105,000 square miles, bounded onthe south by the district of Alberta ; on the east by the line betweenthe 10th and 11th ranges west of the north meridian of the Dominionlands system of survey; until, in proceeding northwards, that lineintersects the Athabasca River ; then by that river and the AthabascaLake and Slave River to the intersection of this with the northernboundary of the district, which is to be the 32nd correction line of theDominion lands townships system, and is very near the 60th parallelof north latitude ; and westward by the Province of British Columbia.
