He filled thisposition until November, 1864, when he was placed incharge of McKimm Hospital, at Baltimore. Hecontinued in this capacity until peace returned, when he-was honorably mustered out. Dr. Read was brevettedlieutenant-colonel U. S. Volunteers January 12, 1866,for faithful and meritorious services during the war. In April, 1866, after an absence and public service ofnearly five years, Dr. Read returned to Norristown andagain resumed Upon the election of General Hartranft as governor ofPennsylvania, and the organization of the PennsylvaniaNational Guard, Dr. Read was appointed surgeon-generalof Pennsylvania, with the rank of brigadier-general, onMay 15, 1874, and reappointed to same position by Gov-ernor Hoyt, March 12, 1876; by Governor Pattison,February 25, 1883 ; by Governor Beaver, June 25, 1887,and by Governor Pattison, January 29, 1891, and holdsthe position at the present time. General Read is a member of the Military Order of theLoyal Legion, the Union League of Philadelphia, theUnited Service Club, the Military Service Institution ofthe United States, the Association of Military Surgeonsof the National Guard of the United States, and thePennsylvania Genealogical Society. In 1876 Governor Hartranft appointed General Re,idto the very responsible position of commissioner for theinsane of the southeastern counties of the State. Thetrust
