Laying out for boiler makers and sheet metal workers; a practical treatise on the layout of boilers, stacks, tanks, pipes, elbows, and miscellaneous sheet metal work . their length to the top,,where they cross over and strike the second stack of tubesat C, thence ranging downwards to the bottom drum, and upthe last stack of tubes to the atmosphere. The circulation of the water is rapid and positive, and takesplace as follows: The hot water, with the steam bubbles inentrainment rise through the two front stack of tubes, anddescend in the rear. The top back drum delivers the feedwater downwards through the back nest of tubes. The tubes themselves being of an odd shape and size, extraones are generally furnished by the builders. In replacing-old tubes, they are first ripped and closed in at each end frominside the drums. The end is then knocked out of the tophole until it is clear of the bottom of the drum. It may thenbe turned enough to start through one of the side doors inthe boiler front. Where the proper expander is at hand, no-trouble will be experienced in resetting the tubes. When twomen do the work, the tubes are first assorted into groups ofT. FIG. 30. section of tube or piping to a little more than the internaldiameter of the tube. From 4 to 6 inches may then be cut offand split in a longitudinal direction. The split edges are thendraw filed, giving the corresponding end of each about a i to8 taper. The two pieces may have to be tried in the hole sev-eral times to form a nice fit. A distance piece is then set inthe split bushing, to keep the bearing edges from turning is obvious, then, that if the end of one of the sections bedriven in with a bar, the taper will cause the bushing to makea snug fit in the tube end. To make a more lasting job, a piece of No. 8 or 16 gaugeiron, i^ inches wide, is cut to a length equal to the innercircumference of the bushing. A pair of roller tube expand-ers of the next size below the original tube may then be ap- the sam
