Undated portrait photo of Neville Chamberlain (1869 - 1940) - Conservative statesman and Prime Minister of the UK from 1937 to 1940. Chamberlain, a former Minister of Health and Chancellor of the Exchequer, became PM in May 1937 and is best remembered for his policy of appeasement towards Hitler. He signed the Munich Agreement in 1938 which ceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany - prompting Chamberlain to famously talk of "peace for our time" - but Britain later declared war on Germany in September 1939 after Hitler's invasion of Poland. Chamberlain continued to lead the country for the first eight months of WW2 but resigned in May 1940 after the Allies were forced to retreat from Norway and was replaced as PM by Winston Churchill.
