The Barbican at Sandwich in Kent, England, was built in the 16th century. It consists of two round towers, with chequered work of stones and flints. A narrow toll road passes between the towers with a semi-circular timber barrel roof over it. A small 2-storeyed 20th-century house was added on the north side of the northwest tower and was occupied by the toll collector for the nearby river Stour bridge crossing. The small historic town of Sandwich, (a former Cinque Port) is one of England’s most historic towns where the street plan has changed little since the Doomsday book of 1086. The town has a higher density of listed medieval buildings than any English town and has the greatest number of medieval structures.
