Occiput usually rather strongly swollen, although gradually rounded Inwardly and regularly sloping inward from the eye margin. In consequence of the thickness of the occiput the vertical groove or fissure behind the ocelli is prominent. Sides of lower occiput usually with conspicuous vertical ridge of some width. Abdomen wide, more or less sub- spherical, or subglobose and convex, and at least, short oval. These flies are rather hare, short pilose for the most part, often with a somewhat denuded appearance. Third antennal segment obtuse at apex, with subapical dorsal spine. Flies ranging from 2 mm. rarely, to 10 mm. rarely 2 Occiput not exceptionally swollen behind and hence the post ocellar, vertical fissure not prominent. Abdomen conical and tapered, either long or short. Third antennal segment variable. Plies ranging from minute, three-fourths of a mm. to mm 3 Occiput much more poorly developed, less prominent, more fiattened; postocellar fissure shallow. Eyes holoptic in male and in contact for a considerable distance and omma- tldia on upper three-fourths of male eye, much enlarged and clearly separated from lower facets. Hypopygium generally less swollen . .-. l/sia (Parageron) Paramonov Occiput more prominent and usually conspicuously pilose, although the pile is not usually long. Postocellar fissure deep and narrow. Lamellae of epipygium (male hypo- pygium) grossly swollen, capsular, and conspicuous. Eyes of both sexes widely separated, the omniatidia alike in males Usia Latreille The diseal cell is complete Oligodranes Loew Discal cell is confluent with the second posterior cell, the medial crossvein being absent Apolysis Loew.
