He is the son of the Archduke FrancisCharles Joseph, brother of the Emperor Ferdinand, and ofSophia, daughter of Maximilian Josej^h, King of March, 1848, after the expulsion of Louis Philippe fromFrance, a revolution followed in Vienna; Prince Metternichfled, a free Constitution was prepared, and accepted byFerdinand, who soon afterwards withdrew from Vienna toInnspruck. Insurrections against the Austrian power brokeout in Hungary and Italy, and a Diet for the fonnationof a united German Empire was assembled at Vienna had been taken possession of by the Im-perial troops, and though Radetzky had obtained advan-tages in Italy, it was felt that a firmer hand than Ferdi-nands was required to secure the Hapsburg dynasty fromfalling.
