Geronima Cagnaccia Parasole. Battle of the Lapiths and Centaurs. 1595–1605. Italy. Woodcut on cream laid paper This large woodcut is the only known signed work by the Roman artist Geronima Cagnaccia Parasole. Female printmakers were rare but not unheard of, and they frequently learned their trade from male relatives or married into artistic families. This print is based on a drawing by Antonio Tempesta, a painter and printmaker who worked in Rome after the 1570s, but is not a direct copy; Parasole made several dramatic changes to the figures’ gestures to suit her own artistic vision.
