The Toromocho Project in the small town of Morococha Yauli province Junin department Peru is the largest mineral investment project in Latin America to date on the part of the Chinese government Chinalco Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd through it s Canadian subsidiary Peru Copper Inc will exploit the rich copper and molybdenum deposits that lie within the Toromocho mountain Before actual open pit mining operations begin Chinalco will buy houses and properties and relocate some 5 000 residents to a still undetermined site The town of La Oroya lies 30 kilometers from Morococha It s air and water are extremely polluted due to a poly metallic smelter owned by the Doe Run Company of St Louis Missouri
