Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888), English naturalist. Gosse travelled to the Americas in 1827, visiting Newfoundland and other parts of Canada, where he collected and drew numerous insect species. After over a decade in Canada he spent a year in Alabama, USA, describing the insects of the region, especially the butterflies and moths. After a brief return to England he went to Jamaica, collecting specimens and studying the island's geology. He returned to England and was instrumental in the establishment of \acquariums\", public displays of marine life that became very popular. He was a fervent creationist, and refuted Darwinian theories in his book Omphalos (1857)."
