CASTLE GRANT, the ancient residence of the Chief of the Grants, isdistant twO miles from the town, and is free to theinspection of visitors at any time when the noble owneris from home, and, when she is at home, on Tuesdays andSaturdays, by orders obtained at the Estate Offices. Onpassing the imposing gateway, the visitor will find him-self in a beautiful avenue, skirted by a border ofrhododendrons and other shrubs, behind which rise thepine trees, with their graceful richly-coloured stalks. Onthe right the view of the Cromdale Hills, seen throughthe many-pillared pine wood, is peculiarly beautiful. Thelime-tree avenue, in the immediate neighbourhood of thecastle, is worthy of notice. The castle itself is not visible. CASTLE GRANT. 31 till almost reached. The fahric is more imposing thanelegant. Part of it dates baek to the fifteenth century,but successive additions have formed it into a highquadrangular pile of many stories, pierced with windowsof various sizes. The entrance hall is adorned withspears, broadswords, and targets. A flight of stepsconducts to the dining-hall, an elegant apartment, 47feet long by 27 feet broad. Its walls, together with thestaircase and some of the bedrooms, are adorned withfamily portraits, together with many valuable paintingsby Vandyke, Guido, Rubens, Poussin, and others. Thedrawing-room and library are fine apartments. Among the curious things to be seen here is a skull,a ghastly memorial of the passing of the castle into thehands of the Grants.
