Aert de Gelder. Jacob Shown Joseph’s Blood-Stained Coat. 1655–1665. Netherlands. Pen and brown ink, with brush and brown wash, with touches of white opaque watercolor, on buff laid paper, laid down on ivory laid paper Aert de Gelder studied with Rembrandt in the last decade of the master’s life, and carried his tradition into the 18th century. In de Gelder’s treatment of this subject, as well as in his style of draftsmanship, the younger artist shows here a preference for the rapid, summary approach to biblical storytelling that was favored by Rembrandt himself.
