Infectious bursal disease virus particle. Computer model of the capsid of the infectious bursal disease virus (Avibirnavirus sp., IBDV). The capsid encloses the virus's genetic information (genome), stored as RNA (ribonucleic acid). IBDV infects young chickens to cause infectious bursal disease (IBD), which suppresses the immune system (immunosupression) and makes the birds susceptible to secondary infections. IBD is highly contagious, and can lead to death.
