Kirb}^^ states that these occur under the following types:— 1. Congenital narrowing of the anus or rectum, without completeocclusion. The anal aperture is at times preternaturally small, either inconsequence of a contraction of the low^er end of the rectum, or from thefact that the skin may extend occasionally over the border of the anal mar-gin. The diagnosis is usually easy, for the contraction is near the anus andcan be readily detected by the finger, or seen when due to a fold of skinextending across the anus. The treatment consists in dividing the ring orskin on the dorsum, and daily dilatation, either wath the finger or soft-rubberbougie. 2. Closure of the anus by a membranous diaphragm (atresia of theanus) is the simplest of all forms of congenital malfonnations, and is treatedby a crucial incision through the membrane. 3.
