Shoreham UK, 5th June 2020: After the warmest May on record, a male Adonis Blue, the rarest of the British blue butterflies, rests on a plant on the south-facing chalk slopes of Truleigh Hill, Shoreham, West Sussex. This tiny species, with a wingspan of one inch, has two broods in a year, once in May - June and the second in August. The population has declined over the last 200 years, but a slight recovery has been noted in recent years, and it is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
