Milecastle 39 on Hadrian's Wall
Hadrians's Wall and the long distance footpath about 2 miles west of Housesteads at the point where the wall drops down from Highshield Crag towards Milecastle 39 (the rectangular structure in the centre of the image). As their name suggests the milecastles were constructed by the Roman military at one mile intervals along the length of the wall and could have held small garrisons easily reenforced from the main forts which were positioned at 7 mile intervals. Beyond the milecastle the wall rises again towards Peel Crag.
