USAID Mission Director Leslie Reed visits a giant clam hatchery at HEPCA's facilities in the Red Sea Governorate. HEPCA is working to restore marine exploited species, such as the native giant clam, to improve coral reef health in the Red Sea. Scientists estimate that if climate change causes a temperature rise of °C, earth would lose between 70-90% of all coral reefs. This monumental loss would catastrophically affect both the Egyptian economy and the country's robust marine life.
