Knee anatomy, computer artwork. The knee joint is formed by the articulation of the femur (thigh bone) with the tibia (shin bone). The smaller fibula (to the right of the tibia) is also seen. The patella (kneecap) lies over the lower part of the femur. The surfaces of the joints are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear.
