In the larva and pupa ftate, it is found cravv^ling at the bot-toms of pools or ditches, and fubfifts on the larvae of Gnats andother Infedls; but in the laft ftate, it leaves its aquatic abode, andfubfifts on fmall viinged infeds, efpecially Moths ; it is not uncom-mon to fee one of this fpecies ftop Ihort in its flight, dart down likea Hawk upon a Moth or Butterfly, and tear it to pieces in an inftant;or fly with it in its mouth, to fome more convenient place to devourit.
