An old engraving of a massive ‘Scythian wagon’ pulled by 22 oxen and carrying a moveable felt-covered dwelling. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. In the background are smaller, yurt-like dwellings. A man rides on a camel pulling a cart. The original Scythians (Scyth, Saka, Sakae, Iskuzai, or Askuzai) were a nomadic people who dominated the Pontic steppe (to the north of the Black Sea across north eastwards to the Caspian Sea) from about the 7th century BC until about the 3rd century BC.

They were part of the wider nomadic cultures, stretching across the Eurasian Steppe – these people are sometimes known as Pontic Scythians. They are generally believed to have been of Iranian origin. The Scythians played an important part in the Silk Road, a vast trade network connecting the civilisations in Greece, Persia, India and China.
