According to Germanic mythology, Nerthus was a goddess of fertility. In this 1905 illustration, a statue of her is shown on a cart, being pulled by white oxen. Nerthus is also identified with the Vanir, who, in Norse mythology, are the deities of fertility. They include Njoror, Freyr, and Freyja. Below is Ing, pictured as an infant. In Norse mythology, Ing is another name for Freyr, who was the patron of fertility, sunlight, and rain. The sagas say that Ing was the husband of the frost giantess Gerd.
