Snowy view from Pennine Way at north end Standedge escarpment, looking west down gristone boulders slope to Castleshaw Reservoirs, South Pennines, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. Snowy view from the Pennine Way at the north end of the Standedge Millstone Grit escarpment, looking west, down a hillside littered with weathered gritstone boulders, across the Castleshaw Reservoirstowards the small town of Delph, South Pennines, Lancashire, UK. The Upper and Lower Castleshaw Reservoirs were built 1887-1891 by the Oldham Corporation Waterworks.
