In short, the philosophical observer will find therein anadditional means for conducting exact investigation into regions fmiiiiiii => JP MEDICAL AND SURGICAL APPLICATIONS 91 hitherto inaccessible to either direct or indirect visual inspec-tion. In practice, the location of an object buried in deep tissues orin the larger cavities of the body often presents peculiar diffi-culties. Suppose a bullet to be lodged near the surface of thelung, there would be a better chance of finding its exact positionthan if it were more deeply embedded. In investigating thebrain, the photographic field is somewhat obscured, as the rayspass through a large mass of soft material and two surfaces ofbone, of varying thickness and density, which under presentmethods are more or less recorded on the plate. In the case of a foreign body in the brain, the action of a cross-record may be explained by the following diagram (Fig. 37) :. Fig. 37. Let sk. represent the skull; /. b. the foreign body; No. I. thelamp, and A the sensitive plate used for the first position; No. lamp, and B the plate for the second position. Then theshadow Al will fix the plane between No. I. and A in which/, The exact point of/, b. on that plane is determined by theshadow B2 on the second plate B, which fixes the plane of /. No. II. and B. In other words, the foreign body lies atthe point of intersection of the two planes obtained by the tworadiograms taken at right angles the one to the other. In takingthe second or cross photograph, the lamp should be placed atexactly the same distance from the plate as in the first should also be over an exactly corresponding part of the plate, 7—2 92 THE RONTGEN HA FS IN MEDICAL WORK as, for instance, the centre. In dealing with an oval object likethe skull, it will be better to leave the latter in one position andto move the l
