There is a slight mixing of faunas of provinces II and III in southwestern Virginia, where there is no stratigraphic separation like that between I and II in the north. Bivalve province III is as restricted geographically as province I and shows no greater diversity, but the specimens are more numerous in a series of closely spaced localities. The two dominant species in province III, Pterinea [Caritodens) demissa and Ambonychia cultrata, exhibit no consistent stratigraphic Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Peabody Museum of Natural History.
