This permitted a steam railroad connection forthe receipt of construction materials, fuel and currentsupplies. Future expansion in shop and car storage facili-ties was provided by the purchase of a site more thanample for the present building and track layout. A por-tion of the property on the east also has been reserved fora future generating station, and the storage and shop baysmay be enlarged by extensions to the Dayton Carhouse and Shops—General View Showing Office in Front and Entrance for Cars at Side sequently the architectural treatment has been along artisticlines, and a modified type of Spanish mission style ofarchitecture was employed. The various departments ofcar maintenance and repairs are so located relative toeach other as to reduce lost motion to a minimum. Facili-ties for employees welfare work, as well as spacious well-lighted office rooms, were also provided for the completeoperating organization. LOCATION Two factors controlled the decision as to location—first, the desirability of reducing non-revenue mileage and,second, a steam railroad connection. Both of these require-ments were lacking in the old location and had materiallyaffected the cost of operation. To obtain a reduction indead car mileage, the new carhouse site was selected asnear the plant of the National Cash Register Company aspossible, because traffic to and from this plant createdt
