PHARYNX. The pharynx (<paguyg, the throat), is a musculo-membranous sac, situated upon the cervical portion of the vertebral column, and ex-tending from the base of the skull to a point corresponding with thecricoid cartilage in front, and the fifth cervical vertebra behind. Itis composed of mucous membrane, muscles, vessels, and nerves, andis invested by a strong fascia, situated between the mucous mem-brane and muscles, which serves to connect it with the basilar pro-cess of the occipital bone and with the petrous portions of the tem-poral bones. Upon its anterior part it is incomplete, and has openinginto it seven foramina, viz. Posterior nares, two, Eustachian tubes, two, Mouth, Larynx, (Esophagus. PHARYNX-STOMACH. 535. The Posterior nares are the two large Fig. 206.* openings at the upper and front part of thepharynx. On each side of these openings,0 and slightly above the posterior terminationof the inferior turbinated bone, is the irregu-lar depression in the mucous membrane, marking the entrance of the Eustachian the posterior nares is the largeopening into the mouth, partly veiled by thesoft palate; and, beneath the root of thetongue, the cordiform opening of the oesophageal opening is the lower con-stricted portion of the pharynx.
