Welsh Highland Railway, Wales. Picturesque view of a steam locomotive transiting the Snowdonia National Park.

Welsh Highland Railway, Wales. Picturesque view of a 1958 narrow gauge Beyer, Peacock and Company built steam locomotive transiting the Snowdonia National Park. The pulling locomotive is number 143 which was the last steam train to be built by the English company Beyer, Peacock and Company. The Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) runs a scheduled timetable on a twenty-five mile route between Porthmadog and Caernarfon. This image shows the return trip from Caernarfon to Porthmadog. Prior to its amalgamation to the WHR for primarily leisure and tourism purposes, the original use of the narrow gauge railway lines was the transportation of slate from the slate mines. The WHR is owned and managed by the Ffestiniog Railway Company which is believed to be the oldest surviving railway company in the world.
