Thisis done early in the spring or as soon as the frost isout of the ties by the tie inspector, who goes overevery mile of track and marks with white paint therail over the ties that it is considered necessary torenew. Ties that are questionable are tested with apick to ascertain the extent to which they are decayedand a record is kept of the number to be renewed ineach mile or quarter mile, showing how many are oncurves and how many on tangent.
