Scliwenniger was born atSelm, in Prussia, on the 23d of Sej^tember, 1832,an<l after a thorough com-se of study, both hterary andecclesiastical, was ordained priest June 9, 1857. He cameto the United States in January, 1866, and having beenreceived by the ]\Iost Reverend Archbishop Purcell inthe Diocese of Cincinnati, was appointed assistant tothe Very Rev. Josepli Ferneding at the Church of , in Cincinnati, and in 1870 was appointed to thenew Church of St. Louis, on Eighth and Walnut Streetsin that city. Here he remained as j^astor till 1875, Avhenhe removed to the Diocese of New York, and was placedin the following year
