They were a forlorn andweary crowd wdien they arrived on the Columbia river, where Dalles Citynow stands. Learning that they could go no farther with their wagons, they hired Indians to take them down the river in boats. Any one that hase^•er seen the rocks, whirlpools, and cascades for which the Columbia riveris noted between there and Portland can have a faint idea of the dangerous un-dertaking before them. Often the water would dash over the boat, completelydrenching the occupants, when they would land, build bonfires and dry theirclothes and bedding. The men would then tow the boats until they reachedsmoother water, while the women would climb over the rocks and logs alongthe shore, carrying and dragging their little ones with them until they couldtake passage again. Six months were consumed ere the little party arrived inOregon City, then a trading post of the Hudson Bay Company. During thejourney down the river a young girl died and was buried on the present.
