Trackway, graveyard & ruined tower of St Mary's Abbey at N end of Bardsey Island, Gwynedd. Founded by AD1200 on a C6th Celtic monastic site.
Trackway, graveyard & ruined tower of St Mary's Abbey at the N of Bardsey Island. Founded by AD1200 on the traditional site of a C6th Celtic monastery associated with SS Cadfan, Dyfrig & Deiniol, the abbey was dissolved 1536-7. The modern Celtic-style high cross is a memorial to the legendary 20,000 saints said to be buried on this sacred isle. When the present roadway was created in the 1870s Christian burials were found, arranged in long cists with their feet pointing eastwards. Artist & writer Brenda Chamberlain lived on Bardsey 1947-61, mainly in Carreg farmhouse; she described her experiences in the book Tide-race published in 1962.
