Siberut is the largest and northernmost of the Mentawai Islands, lying west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. A part of Indonesia, the island is the most important home for the Mentawai people. They live a semi-nomadic hunter - gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rainforest environments of the islands. The Mentawai indigenous population is estimated to be about 64,000.
