Ectopic pregnancy, coloured frontal X-ray. A contrast medium has been used to show the female reproductive organs. The uterus (womb) is the white mass at centre left, and the foetus, which is ten to twelve weeks old, is at upper centre. The foetus is in the right Fallopian tube, an open ended tube that receives the egg when its released from the ovary. In ectopic pregnancy the foetus grows outside of the uterus, often in the fallopian tubes. If the pregnancy goes undetected the fallopian tube will eventually burst, causing haemorrhaging into the mother's abdomen, which may be fatal. Surgery is performed to remove the foetus and repair or remove the Fallopian tube.
