As symbiotic relationship LONDON COMICAL images show a Jackdaw picking clean the ears and eyes of a Fallow deer. Captured in Richmond Park near Pen Ponds. Jackdaws, the smallest crow species, have a symbiotic relationship with deer. They are described as ‘colonial cavity nesters’ as they live in cavities such as holes in trees and buildings. These birds line their nests with fur to make their homes more comfortable and insulated. To obtain these furs, jackdaws pick on the coats of deer, in turn ‘helping’ the deer lose some of their winter coat. These endearing images were snapped by a British wildlife photographer and a PhD student, Harald Rice (29). “Pictures like these are special to me. They depict the harmonious relationship with which animals exist in the natural world,” he said. “So often, we assume they live totally separate lives, but in reality, they are reliant on each other to create a liveable environment. “And this is just a particularly visible example of such a relationship.” ENDs
