Anthers bifid at the apex ; lobes biaristate. Style 1. Stigma obtuse. Hypogynom scales 10, obsolete, or connate at the base. Capsule depressedly globose, ,5-celled, 5-furrowed, covered by the calyx, which is sometimes baccate; valves septiferous in the middle. Placentas adnate to the base of the column. Seeds numerous, covered by a reticulated testa. (Don's Mill.) Leaves simple, alternate, exstipulate, evergreen; toothed, ciliated. Flowers axillary and terminal, racemose, rarely solitary; pedicels bibracteolate. Co- rollas white, rose-coloured, or scarlet.
