Here was situated the rich andprosperous city of Massilia, founded at the beginning of thesixth century by Greek refugees from Phocaea, and long unitedin firm alliance with Rome. It was the necessity of protectingtheir allies from the raids of the Ligurians that led the Romansto extend their territory in this district, and another importantmotive was the maintenance of easy communication betweenItaly and Spain.
