Much improvement can be accomplished by keeping themachine tools and appliances in good condition, and this isessential when scientific management is finally realized. Ifstandard times or standard rates are to be set with exactness,all of the conditions under which the work will be done mustbe known and these conditions must be realized when thework is performed. One of these important factors is thatthe machine tools and appliances must be in excellent condi-tion, and these conditions must be standard — that is, must be 154 C0ST KEEPING AND SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT maintained. In the great majority of shops the condition ofthe machine tools is far from excellent, and no provision ismade for standardizing conditions.
