Greenock West End Outstanding Conservation Area

Forsyth Street, located within Greenock West End Outstanding Conservation Area. Greenock is located on the River Clyde 22 miles from Glasgow (on the West coast of Scotland) and most famously is the birthplace of James Watt. Greenock's historic prosperity was built on trade, manufacturing and shipbuilding especially during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; this prosperity is reflected in the quality the built environment in several areas of the town which survive largely intact from Victorian times. Given special protection through its designation as an Outstanding Conservation Area and the listing of many of its buildings, this largely residential area still evokes the quality of Greenock's heyday. In recent years, urban deprivation followed in the decline of traditional heavy industries. Although partially offset in the late twentieth century by the intoduction of electronics manufacturers such as IBM to the area (and its popular designation as Silicon Glen) decline has taken its toll.
